Teamwork in the Kitchen: SnowTubing Donuts
Warm, golden, and full of winter fun
SnowTubing Donuts are soft, lightly sweet, and shaped like little winter tubes. In our cooking class, this recipe becomes more than just frying donuts — it’s a chance for children to explore dough, observe yeast in action, develop fine motor skills, practice gentle shaping, and experience the excitement of transforming simple ingredients into fluffy “snow tubes.”
This class works beautifully both one-on-one and in small groups, offering each child hands-on tasks and moments of independence.
What kids work with in this class:
- warm milk
- yeast
- sugar
- vanilla
- lemon zest (optional)
- flour
- sunflower seed oil
- dough cutters (big & small circles)
- powdered sugar or melted chocolate





Class Flow
❤️ We begin by “waking up” the yeast — warm milk, a sprinkle of sugar, and instant yeast.
Children watch how tiny bubbles form, learning that dough is “alive” and responds to warmth and care.
✨ A small demonstration dough helps them understand how ingredients come together without waiting through a full rise.
This short moment teaches patience, observation, and curiosity.
❤️ Kids mix the dough with a spoon and finish with their hands, exploring texture and practicing gentle kneading — a calming, sensory-rich activity that builds coordination and strength.
❤️ We roll the dough using both hands and slow, even pressure — wonderful for bilateral coordination and body awareness.
❤️ Children use circle cutters to create “snow tubes”:
a big circle for the donut, a small circle in the center for the tubing hole.
This simple step gives them precision practice, decision-making, and ownership over the shape.
❤️ They lay out their donut rings on the tray like tiny winter wheels, noticing sizes, patterns, and spacing.
❤️ Frying is done only by adults, but children watch from a safe distance, guessing:
- Will it puff up?
- Will it flip?
- What color will it become?
This moment feels a bit like watching “winter magic” unfold.
❤️ When the donuts cool slightly, kids decorate them:
powdered sugar (snow), melted chocolate (sled tracks), or thin vanilla glaze.
Each child creates their own “snow tube design.”
❤️ Finally, they proudly taste their creations — warm, soft, and full of winter joy.
