Apple & Pear Fall Cake — Cooking Class

This fall cake is all about teamwork and togetherness. With lots of apples and pears and just a little dough, children discover the joy of making something together that’s bigger than the sum of its parts. Each child has an important role — whether it’s adding an ingredient, solving a math challenge, or cutting fruit. The cake becomes a true group creation, full of warmth, responsibility, and unity.

What kids work with in this class:

This class always starts with a smile. I bring out a bowl of shiny apples and say with a serious face: “Look, children, what wonderful vegetables we have here!”

The room instantly fills with laughter — the kids know, of course, that apples are fruits. They correct me with excitement, happy to catch a “mistake.” It’s a light, playful way to begin — and already we have laughter, attention, and joy in the air.

From there, we dive deeper: exploring the apples through a riddle, touching, smelling, tasting, comparing. The children describe the color, shape, size, even the flavor — sour, sweet, juicy. It’s a whole discovery process, not just an ingredient.

The biggest highlight comes when it’s time to cut. Yes, real knives — but small ones, safe for little hands, with thick blades. I show them how to hold a knife, how fingers should stay tucked, how eyes always watch the hands. And then something magical happens: children straighten their backs, become so focused, so careful. They love the responsibility, and they feel trusted.

Each child also gets a little card with an ingredient name and a math puzzle. They pick it “blindly” and then, when it’s their turn, proudly read (or with help) and add it in. Older children practice their reading and math, younger ones are inspired by them, and everyone feels needed.

And then, piece by piece, the apples go into the bowl, the flour gets sifted, the cinnamon fills the air… Until one big cake comes together, created by many small hands.

The smell while baking is unbelievable — cozy, warm, cinnamon-sweet. By the time we slice it, the children’s faces glow with pride: “We made it together!”

Skills & Highlights:

   •          working as a team and valuing everyone’s role

   •          learning safe knife skills and self-control

   •          math and reading in a playful, natural way

   •          sensory exploration: touch, smell, taste, compare

   •          joy of creating something and sharing it as a group

This recipe works not only for one big cake, but also for several small ones. We’ve tried it both ways — smaller cakes are easier to pack, they don’t fall apart, and each child can take their own piece of creation home. In the end, it all depends on the goals we set for the group.

May this recipe bring not only warmth and aroma to your kitchen, but also to your relationship with your children. ❤️
