I remember about ten years ago, during the Christmas season, when we built a whole “cookie city” together. The format was simple: there were creative workshops for adults, and one of them was my own gingerbread workshop for children.
What amazed me most was the children’s ability to stay focused for such a long time. And there was a very clear reason for it:
❤️ no one was “teaching” them that evening — we were simply creating together, and it felt good;
❤️ the children joined freely, by their own choice — and just as freely left when they were done;
❤️ the adults nearby were genuinely engaged in their own creativity;
❤️ and finally, no one spoke in terms of “right/wrong” or “beautiful/ugly” — the process itself was what mattered.
That evening I felt with every fiber of my being the value of truly free children’s creativity. And I also realized something else: in that setting, freedom felt easy. Why? Probably because freedom had first become part of the space itself — and part of me, as the adult leading it.
What Creates a Safe Space?
I believe every adult can immerse themselves in an activity so deeply that a child feels it as a safe, free space. That’s what true coziness is. In those moments, connection happens naturally — soul to soul.
It’s also when the most important words come out effortlessly:
“I love you.”
“I’m so glad you’re here.”
“Do you remember when…?”
And gratitude begins to flow straight from the heart.
Why the Kitchen Is the Perfect Place
The kitchen is one of the easiest spaces where this kind of freedom can be created. Cooking is a daily activity, but when shared with a child, it turns into something more:
• a chance to slow down and enjoy the moment,
• an opportunity for the child to explore with all their senses,
• a natural way to feel “grown up” while being safely guided.
This is exactly what inspired me to create my “Savor Life” books. Recipes, poems, riddles, and little activities are not only about food — they are gentle invitations into connection. They remind us that the process itself is precious, and the sweetest result is the closeness we share along the way.
✨ Starting from this place of safety and freedom makes any shared activity — whether baking cookies, painting, or simply being side by side — a source of joy and trust. And in the kitchen, that joy can be both nourishing and delicious.
